Can chickens live on pasture alone?

Or do you have to supplement them?

Pasture probably won't give them all the nutrients they need to produce a lot of eggs, but they could SURVIVE on it

We pasture. When pastured alone we do not get the rates of growth or eggs you get when supplemental feed is supplied.

They eat a lot less feed when on pasture.

I guess I'll have to have the right breed too. I had brahmas out in the pasture and a few died. I think they starved, but I'm not sure. There was no other reason. I took the rest (who felt really bony) out of the pasture and put them in a pen. I have blue-laced red wyandottes still out in pasture and they're just fine. What breeds do well on pasture?

Honey it depends on what's growing in your pasture. There;s stuff a chicken won't eat. I seem to remember that feather footed birds can't scratch as well for food.

Mostly kentucky blue grass. The goats are fat and happy on nothing but grass so I thought the chickens would be too. And there's tons of bugs out there.
