Can chickens live on pasture alone?

Or do you have to supplement them?

I guess I'll have to have the right breed too. I had brahmas out in the pasture and a few died. I think they starved, but I'm not sure. There was no other reason. I took the rest (who felt really bony) out of the pasture and put them in a pen. I have blue-laced red wyandottes still out in pasture and they're just fine. What breeds do well on pasture?

Honey it depends on what's growing in your pasture. There;s stuff a chicken won't eat. I seem to remember that feather footed birds can't scratch as well for food.

Mostly kentucky blue grass. The goats are fat and happy on nothing but grass so I thought the chickens would be too. And there's tons of bugs out there.
