Just a word of caution: when your chick is very young, they have naval/cord stump that you may mistake for part of a pasty butt. Be careful. It's not in the same place, the butt, but nearby and you don't want to pull on it.

Thanks.Warm water on a towel put to the paste can cause it to soften up and eventually come off. You can gently massage the area with the towel to help break it up, but do not pull.
On a side note, depending on how the pasting looks, it might not even need treating. I had a chick that had a bit of pasting, but the vent was completely clear. I just checked in on them daily to make sure the vent remained clear and they grew up fine without any further action on my part. They will groom themselves and feathers do eventually fall out, this paste likely just fell off over time.
A dab of olive or coconut oil on the fuzz just under the vent can sometimes keep poop from sticking. Just a dab…Good morning. I'm having an issue with pasty butt. Well, not me particularly but rather my new chicks. I've had this issue before but medicated feed, keeping the water fresh, and lowering the temp has usually worked. This clutch is still having issues despite these adjustments. Anyone have further suggestions?
Thank you! I'll give it a try.A dab of olive or coconut oil on the fuzz just under the vent can sometimes keep poop from sticking. Just a dab…
