Very very very new to raising chickens. I have a chick Wyandotte that has pasty but. I have had the chick since Saturday. Noticed it Monday. Cleaned off the chick and applied vasaline. Today was slightly better. How do I prevent this or cure I have read 100 things all confusing and in some cases contradiction...thanks for the advice

I have always eliminated the incidences of pasted vent with the use of probiotics.
I use Gro2Max probiotic powder in the chicks first (dechlorinated) water.
A chick raised by a hen usually gets its gut bacteria from her.

Usually chicks shipped in the mail to homes or to feed stores, are the ones most likely to get pasty butt. It comes from shipping stress, including dehydration or getting cold. It can happen daily up to about 7 days old, so check vents daily or more often, and clean off promptly with soap and warm water. Make sure the chick is drinking well and eating, since pasty butt may prevent them from passing droppings. Poultry NutriDrench 1-2 drops is good to give for a couple of days to give a boost. Unfortunately, I notice quite a few of chicks in feed stores who have this, and it seems to go unnoticed.
