I have been reading all the info on the issue of pasty butt and it all refers to chicks..I have a 1 year old hen who seems healthy is eating and moving about fine however...she seems to have pasty butt!! Also it appears that there is a dripping from her butt. What do I do..and her butt looks very red when I cleaned her. Any suggestions?

Do you think an egg has broken inside? Is she egg bound? Or is the pastyness around the shafts of her feathers and stuck like louse eggs? Maybe a picture or a little better description would be in order. When she poos is it normal, runny, really big or bloody? Terri O

does it look anything like this?? that sounds a lot like what happened to one of my hens.

This is kinda like what mine looked like today that I just posted about - what is this picture of? And is the chicken okay now? What did you do?

supposedly it's called "vent gleet". here's a link of things to help cure it
http://ultimatefowl.atwiki.com/page/Vent GleetI tried the best I could to help cure her. but sadly, she died of her vent getting blocked. you gotta do exactly what they say to do in the link.

oh no. I think one of our older hens that we just got last week has vent gleet!

we washed her backside this morning to see if that helps.

Sometimes it is just because of their food. By any chance do you have chick/broiler/gamebird feed they can get into? Too high of protein can give them diarrhea.
