One of my chicks has been fighting pasty butt and now her poop is white. Her vent is swollen and she will not sit down.

Here is my original post that I posted, before her poop was white.

I am a new chicken mom. I have 10 baby chicks. My rumpless tufted auracana has had pasty butt several times now. We have been gently wiping her bottom and cleaning her off. She is 4 days old. Now it appears that her vent is red, lightly bleeding and protruding. Any help on what to do? Really worried.

Soak her bottom in warm water. Then apply gentle pressure to the abdomen and try to help her work it out. I had this with one chick and it wasn't pleasant, but the chick made a full recovery. A little olive oil can help sooth the vent and also keep poop from sticking in the future. Also be sure the chicks are not too hot and that they have plenty of fresh, warm (not cold) water to drink. Good Luck.

Hello snremer! I have a baby chick with what seem to be the exact same symptoms. Most advice I find seems to be for pasty butt but not this specific set of problems. Do you remember what ended up working for your chick (or what the end result was?)? I've tried probiotics, apple cider vinegar, egg. I've been keeping the vent clean for 4 days and using bluekote, but it still looks irritated and the chick is losing energy. It doesn't seem to be growing while the others have almost doubled in size. Very sad to watch it. Please help!!

Dehydration is the main factor in past butt. What is the heat set at in the brooder ? Are you adding the ACV to the drinking water ? Rather than wiping the bottom and agravating the little guys bottom , try rinsing under warm water. A little Vaseline smeared around the vent will stop the poop sticking.

And :welcome

Temp is 80 right now (they're a week old) so that actually seems a bit cold? Behavior of the rest of the flock is normal though (roaming, no clumping).

I added a few drops of ACV to their drinking water. To clean the hiney I've been using a q-tip with warm water to gently moisten and loosen the stool. Vaseline didn't seem to help and to deal with the irritation I just got bluekote.

She is trying to poop and externally the vent seems clear but only a tiny bit of white poop comes out. Trace amounts of blood just appeared as well. External cleaning won't seem to fix this.

I've heard of bathing the chick in warm water and massaging the lower abdomen to "squeeze" poop out. Any thoughts on trying this. She seems very stressed already but I don't know if she'll make it if I do nothing.

That temp does seem a little low. I wouldn't squeeze poop out as you may end up with a prolapsed vent. Make a soft scrambled egg up and sprinkle a little chick starter into it.
A triple antibiotic cream or even a hemaroid cream may be a better option to blukote.
