This chick is now 5 days old and I keep having to wash its butt with warm water. The area is red and inflamed as well and I can't see the vent. What does look like an opening, is much higher than it should be in my novice opinion. What do you think?

Can someone, anyone, PLEASE give me some advice?????

My chick is dying, can I do anything to help her? She can hardly keep her eyes open, keeps falling asleep, isn't eating or drinking. I keep cleaning her butt but it keeps getting stuck with poop again. I've added ground oatmeal to their feed and apple cider vinegar to the water. Not that its going to do anything with her not eating/drinking.

Is there a blockage that needs to be pushed out?

the oatmeal is a clogging thing
so do not put oatmeal in her diet

if any thing she needs
playschool sand which is a means of loosing the manure

1 cup of playschool sand to 1 gallon of feed

she is suffering of either it being too hot or too cold in the brooder

SO DO NOT PUT ANY MORE OATMEAL IN THE FEED

I would use a eye dropper to hydrate her with some pediolyte
and or sugar water
and give her a couple of drops by the beak of polyvisol with out iron every day to save her

Also you can give her by beak some canned pumpkin or applesauce for food

she is probably not going to make it but give it a try

any questions email me

I am trying to figure out why it's little bottom is red and inflamed.

A little bit of "pasty butt" is not uncommon in new baby chicks. I feed mine only medicated chick starter and just regular clean water. I have had a few that have had "pasty butt" and all I have to do to clean them is lightly coat the area with a bit of warm water, maybe use a little towel and gently remove the poo, not pick it off. It sometimes helps to coat with a little vaseline so that their little bottom does not become raw. You have to check them when they are small several times a day, they usually grow out it it in a week or so. Sometimes the condition may be brought on by temperature extremes, either too hot or too cold.:

I am sorry but for some reason I am not able to view the pics to get greater detail. When was the last time that the little chick ate or drank anything? Is it's little bottom still pasted up?

Thanks for the replies. I am so very saddened by this, as she was the first chick to hatch...so I thought she would have been the hardiest one

I've kept the temperature pretty constant at 92...the other 3 chicks are doing well. The chick was eating and drinking earlier today, I took a nap and when I woke up to check on her, she was very drowsy and has continued to be so.

I've cleaned her butt 3 times today...whenever I noticed it was pasted over. It almost seems like there is poo needing to come out because the area is so swollen. Thanks again for the replies, I'm sure she will go later today

I will say a little prayer for your baby.

I was able to view the pics this next time around and I can't see the vent either.

Continue to try to get her to drink some water. I don't know what else you could try...if there was something that could be put upon it's little bottom topically (you know, like when humans have trouble with hemmerroids, preparation H) but if there is something safe for little chicks to help reduce that swelling, I don't know what it would be...I am so sorry! I hope she pulls through...

the cleaning of the rear is what causes it to be inflamed
so do put some neosporium on it for the internal infection

hopefully she will recover

I'd add that you should help her from the inside out. I'd give her a little probiotic to help her gut correct itself. For her little size, 1/4th teaspoon or less of yogurt. mix it with a little boiled egg yolk and I bet she'll eat it.

Thank you for all the suggestions and sweet words. My little one passed on tonight. I don't think I'll want to hatch chickens for a very long time, if ever.

Aww how sad. I'm so sorry.

My mom warned me when I bought my first chicken on my own again as a grown-up that they would break my heart. "You can't do it, Nat!" she said. I insisted that since I already had the rooster at my house (a rescue from a certain beheading since he showed up at someone else's place) that I was not looking back.

She was right in some ways. They will break your heart. But I hope you find it in your heart again at least to have babies, if not hatch them. Or to keep chickens at least. They can bring such joy for their little short times on earth.

/hugs
