Hi all, I have 6 chicks that are 5 days old. All healthy and active on arrival. 3 of them came down with pasty butt last night. They have been cleaned and seem fine now. Is this caused by something in their diet or just the way it goes? Should I expect it to continue or maybe a one time thing? They are eating Manna Pro medicated chick starter and I have been giving them save-a-chick electrolyte and probiotic in their water. Is there anything anyone out there would suggest I change, do, or not do? Thanks!!

Take a wet warm rag and slowly wash it off. Don't rub the vent cause you will irritate it. It will slowly soften and come off. If you look on you tube there are alot of videos showing how to do it also. Pasty butt can kill them if it gets bad enough.

We put dry probiotic on the starter feed. We just sprinkle it on the feed and they seem to get enough. We have not had pasty butt since we started this. By putting it the feed the water, it is suppose to be mixed in does not get yucky.

When we have them we clean their little butts, and even around the vent then rub Olive Oil on it so it does not get chapped and red. We liberally apply olive oil it seems to help a lot.

This is purely antidotal and is not scientific at all, it just seems to work for us.

You have to be careful, I used olive oil and the other chicks chased her around. I think she smelled like lunch?? Anyways I got Vaseline and applied that with a q-tip and they left her alone. I removed her from the others for 3 days.

Pasty butt is usually stress related. Too much time in transit, the brooder being in too noise a place, too crowded a brooder, too hot, too cool...all of these things can contribute. Make sure your chicks have plenty of room to move about, make sure that they aren't too warm or too cool, and keep the brooder in a dimly lit, quiet place. Check everyones' vents at least 2 or 3 times a day, and clean them when necessary.
