Does anyone know how to break down one of those probiotic packages you get at Tractor Supply (the orange “Save A Chick” ones) to put a bit in a quart waterer? I only have four new chicks and I cleaned a pasty butt on one today. I don’t want to use a whole packet. Thanks!

One packet makes a gallon. There are four quarts in a gallon, so when we had used that, we poured it out on a plate. Then with a piece of paper, divided it into fourths. We used one fourth for a quart, then put the other parts into their own sandwich baggy.

Usually, pasty butt comes from being too hot. Do they have plenty of room to escape the heat?

Great idea! I don’t know why I didn’t think of that!

Yes. Check that there is a gradient of temperature from 70-85 from one end of the brooder to the other. Chicks like to go warm up under the lamp and go play in the cooler zones.
I am not using a heat lamp. I am using one of those warming plates that I got from Premier one I may have it set too low. I have them in a plastic tub in our guest bedroom bathroom temporarily I’m going to put them in a puppy playpen later this week in our basement. They seem very healthy eating and drinking and running around but one of them is having a loose poop. I’m hoping that the probiotics will help with that and I will raise that heating plate up today. Thanks.

With a plate they should be fine with regulating their own temperatures. Make sure if you raise it that they can still easily make contact with it to warm up if needed.
