Hi All, We received our very first batch of Guineas yesterday. All are doing great, but today I noticed one that wasn't acting right. I found she had a pasty butt, so I went through and checked them all. I cleaned it with a q-tip dipped in warm water and put coconut oil on it. I have done this several times throughout the day. It seems clean now, but I just checked and it looks a bit swollen.
She will not lay down, eat or drink. I have been giving her sugar water in a dropper and she is taking some of that. Anything else I can do? I really want to try to save her. I tried scrambled egg and she will not eat at all! She is just standing there, can walk though, but is wobbley. Thanks so much!

Poultry vitamins.
Nutri Drench is a brand name of them.

I'm so sorry you lost her. Just a few tips on preventing pasty butt -

(1) Make sure you aren't over heating them. If they are huddled far away from the lamp they are very likely too hot.

(2) If you are currently using a white light to keep them warm, I would definitely recommend switching to a red lamp. I've noticed that this keeps my chicks happy and stress free, as they don't have a glaring white light shining on them all day.

(3) Make sure they have a clean brooder at all times, as well as plenty of fresh food and water. I also put apple cider vinegar in their water, for the first few days, as a natural immune booster.

(4) I keep my chicks on newspaper for the first week, with roller towel spread over it to avoid them slipping. Only after the first week I use pine shavings as bedding. Until they know for sure what is their food, and what isn't, they may eat a couple of shavings which isn't good for their digestion.
