I know I've read this on here but can't find it again. My 4 day old chicks have pasty butt....their poo is all dried around their butt. I soaked them in warm water until it became wet enough to just fall off. Now they are all clean, eating and drinking. I will watch to see if this happnes again. If so, what do I do? Is there something I should add to their food/water? Thanks!

I just got my new chicks in the mail so I've been reading up on this. Several suggestions for apple cider vinegar in the water. Several for getting chick grit. Several said, just keep it clean and after the first week its not really a problem because they can reach back there and clean it themselves.

Also, once you've cleaned the area, put a little vaseline on the area, won't prevent it but it keeps the next batch of poo from sticking.

One therory was that the brooder area might be too hot, drying the poop quickly on the butt?

First make sure your temps aren't too high in your brooder. Keep a thermometer in it to keep a check on temps especially now with the heat. Second add some apple cider vinegar to the water. I grind up oatmeal and add to their medicated food also. Keep it cleaned off and dab olive oil to their butt or vaseline, just whatever is handy for you. It should never be left on them, it can kill a chick. Hope this helps.
