Pasty butt??????

You know, you really don't need to remove it as long as their butt isn't actually plugged up with it. As long as they can still squeeze out their poop, it's not doing them any harm to have slightly poopy butts. Ripping out fluff though could really injure them. If any of mine have poopy fluff, I pick them up and look closely. As long as their actual vent is clear, I don't bother trying to remove it. If you're not sure, blow gently at their butts and you shoudl see their little vents puckering in and out.

Oh man, I can't believe I just typed that. 'Now blow on your chicken's butt....'

All of our Iowa Blues (9 total) had pasty butts, but none of the other baby chicks (16 others) we bought at the same time did. We had taken the "wait and see" road

, but ended up spending one Saturday night having to clean them up. it got really caked on tho', so we ended up dipping their tushes in warm water to soak them, then used damp paper towels to work it off from there. Some took a few dunkings... Since it was early spring and still chilly out, we actually used a blow dryer on low heat setting to dry them!

After that, we put organic Apple Cider Vinegar in their water. The couple of times I forgot to do this, the pasty butt came back.
