Pasty butt....

Ive got 6 new chicks and a couple of them have got mild pay butts, ive treas on here that you can give them boiled eggs and it would help, is this true and do they need grit to eat it?

I have four 4-day old hens and two of them had minor pasty butts. The best thing for me so far was to soak a paper towel in warm water, and squeeze some of the water off so it just wasn't dripping. Then I held the chick with the paper towel on her behind for a few minutes. After a few minutes I could gently scrub the stuff off. Then I used a q-tip with some olive oil on it on their vents and so far so good.

I also added a little bit of apple cider vinegar to their water.

thanks, they are my first, ive been washing their little butts, I just didnt know if there was anything to do to keep it from happening mine are about 3 days old, and had a few people worry me losing theirs to pay butt.

ACV is also good for the chicks. I found that putting baby rash cream on their vent also helps. Congrats on the new chicks!

When mine were babies they got pasty butt. I gave them eggs, ACV, and they still got it so I just soaked a washcloth in warm water and then I gently rubbed in on their butts. It takes a bit of time to get it off but it should come off. I didn't really know how to stop it so I just kept cleaning!

Had the same issue and kept seeing people post about adding sand as grit for chicks. I also noticed that chick starter food is really hard! I blended their food into almost a powder and no more pasty butt! They seem to eat a lot more...of course I did add a tsp of ACV to their water but the powdered food seems to be working. After 2 weeks I will add regular chick grit and stop grinding their food.
