Pasty butts and soft stool

We got our chicks last week...YEA and they have been wonderful to watch. Lately a couple of them have had pasty butts, I clean them and move on, everyone is eating, no one looking ill...in fact they all look great except for the butts. My question is, what signs of coccidia should I look for? Should a do a preventative dose? I don't real like medicating unless I have to but if it will save chicks I'll do it

I had pasty butt in a few of mine and it had nothing to do with cocci. It can be from too hot, or a weak chick. I gave mine some apple cider vineger in the water, a little yougurt, and made sure they had some chick grit or play sand. I also put some oil on their butts to keep it from sticking again, and trimmed any feathers in the way. I thought it was never going to end cleaning the butts, but it did.

If the temps are too cool, this can cause pasty butt too. Basically any stress can cause it.

Fortunately, pasty butts seem to be a limited time event. In the mean time, it really does help to trim their tush feathers, and use oil in the area to help poo slid on down to the bottom of the coop. As they mature and are less stressful about their new surroundings, it should clear up. Good luck!

I have used a little olive oil on the end
tail feathers
it kept them from getting pasty.

Thanks everyone for your advice, I'm not so stressed about it now. We'll be doing the wipe down tonight with a hint of olive oil

I like the chick stage, but I'm really looking forward to watching them outside in the yard!
