We have 3 day old chicks and 2 of them have pasty butts. What causes this and what is the safest removal of the mess ? Thanks for any help !!!

My chicks are a week old and two of them had it for 2 days and I used olive oil on a q-tip to gently swab the area. I was also told to give the chicks a bit of ground up oatmeal...which they love. No more pasty butt here

Hold the chick, butt first, under the faucet. Water temp should be "elbow" comfortable. It may take awhile to soften the hardened poop. Once it softens, just crumble it off with your fingers. Pat dry. Most folks like to lube the vent area with vasoline or olive oil.

It is usually just a symptom of shipping stress that goes away in a day or two.

I agree with Fred. I run some luke warm water and hold thier little but under the water and break it up with my fingers. Then dry them with paper towel.

so glad I just seen this post. I think I have the same issue with 2 of my buff orpingtons that are 2 wks old. I noticed after having them 1 day 2 of them have really nasty butts, looks like poop is sticking badly. I even seen one walking around with it kinda stuck hanging out. I'm going to try what you are recommend.

2 of my chicks have this so I started to just sprinkle oats on top of their food when I top off, this seems to help alot.
