Hey all,
I'm a new (within two weeks) and proud owner of a suburban flock in S. Georgia. I've got 4 ladies, two Barred Rock and two Rhode I. Reds, all about 11-12 months old.
We had 10 at one point (bought and brought them into town for family/friends down the road). Two game-hens, and four other Reds parted our coup.
After the went to their happy new home there was a good two-four hour period of rambunctious social reconfiguration in our run (I'm guessing re-organizing themselves).. there were lots of little squabbles and quite a bit of hootin and hollerin.
Both Barred rocks seem to be very dominant and atop the pecking order, and both have been laying everyday (except today-only one). The Reds have yet to lay (in roughly two weeks) and both seem to have some health problems.
Both reds are also significantly smaller in weight then the B. Rocks. and the B. Rocks often run them away from feeding trays (their are multiple, but only one 4 water)
We noticed after the squabbles (but could have occurred before) that one red is missing an eye. She constantly emits a white puss that sometimes crusts over/breaks like a scab. We have tried to clean it with warm water and neosporin but the results only seem to make it develop into a worse condition. She seems to be dealing well, eats and drink regularly but we are a little worried.
Any advice?
Also,
Our other Red seems to be the lowest on the pecking order. She has a constant layer of white crusted poo on her backside (though she very often emits a yellow/stick/stinky poo) that looks like it is rotting her feathers. She is the smallest in weight, and seems to be largely missing her abdomen (back-side), thought she is active and eats regularly. She is also the only one Ive seen sneeze.. but doesn't occur often.
The weather here is just getting warm again (after a week or two of on-again off-again deep freezes), temp. in the day around 70. I thought this, combined with letting them free range during the day may increase their laying, but it seems to have decreased??
They get more then enough in layer feed, kitchen scrapes *mostly greens, bread, and fruits, and have been free ranging for four days.
