Peacock dead this morning, other pea problems need answers.

Thanks for your kind words bdfive. It helped a bit. I cannot keep him inside much longer or he will start to decompose even though I have some ice packs around the parts where there are no feathers I want to pull to slow that process and if I refreeze him I will have the same dilemma again.

I just wish I could get the feathers out to save or have someone tell me how to get them out, they won't budge. Our grounds are frozen and covered in snow so I cannot bury him and I will not throw him in the garbage.

I hate to cut them off unless I have no other choice. Any of you wonderful guys have a suggestion?

Yea, I remember you saying that. Sorry, I forgot. The only thing that I can think of at this time, is to put him back in the freezer. I know that you probably may not want to hear that but that is the only way that I can think of to help preserve Allen until we can find out what to do. Are you ok doing that again until we can figure something out?

So sorry for your loss:hugs

Wasn't a test done that should be back by now? It's cold and raining here in the Hill Country of Texas. My Java are penned. I'm tempted to roof all instead of just 10' of the 30'. I worry the ground being wet will bring up worms bad for my birds. It's so heartwrenching when they become ill and sometimes die not knowing what to do for them. Vets are so expensive and in many cases unless you use an Avian Vet they pass anyway. I did get my 2010 hatched Pied peahen's wing taped by our vet but only time will tell if it heals. She's been on cardboard on our closed in back porch for 6 weeks now. 2 more weeks to go and the tape can come off. Have needed to keep her warm and dry. My poor girl. She is a trooper........doing well other then the break. Life would certainly be easier without animals but probably boring. My Java male's tail is growing and when I'm out there cleaning and feeding him from my hand I'm in complete awe at the beauty.

Still no clue on what happened to Allan but still searching. Everyone in the coop he was in is now looking quite good.

Another group which is no where near him and has never had contact with him is sick, well some of them are and this guy who was helping me clean in that group did something that may have made things a lot worse, he decided without my knowledge to sweep in there and when I went in it looked like a dessert, Shortly after that a few of them started getting swollen eyes and colds. He definitely stirred something up. It cannot be undone and I have them on aureomycin now, many seem fine but some are not.

If I had the nerve to cut him open and knew what I was looking for perhaps I could find out but I do not. I finally got some feathers out!!! I tried with all my might on the 13th and was able to get the fancy tail feathers using pliers, a time consuming task and then had to boil the ends to get the ones with flesh attached loose and then had to clean that off. The 13th was my grandma's birthday so I had a feeling something would happen that day.

The next day I took Allan to my friend Martha who got some of the harder feathers off of him for me which I haven't washed yet but many came out very clean, she had better pliers and has done this before.

He is now double bagged in my refrigerator until I can make a space in my freezer until the ground thaws to bury him. Since the tail feathers are off I was able to fit him in there now.

You guys sure know how to help me and I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.

The first blood samples were not used and the second ones were only taken from another group that is having problems. No clue why they couldn't take blood from his group, well actually she only brought 4 needles and we tried to take blood from the last one which was in Allan's group and she couldn't get enough blood from her to use, figures. The 3 blood she did get was from a totally different group I mentioned above that is having problems more so since the sweeping, prior to that just your basic slight things. I will probably have to spend money I don't have to see if I can get a bird in Allan's group tested too.

When I took my dog to our vet there was a lady there waiting for results of an autopsy on a goat. The vet came out and talked to her....turns out they ate too much corn. He only charged her $45 and that covered the cost of disposing of the carcass. This was at a vet's office in the country that treats farm animals as well as pets. Perhaps you could call around and find one that is reasonable. I also read a bunch of pigeons once fell from the sky dead. It turned out there had been an abundance of sunflower seeds at a factory or something they had eaten. Overfilling themselves is what killed them. My peafowl love some foods and could probably do the same thing.
