Is it possible to attach a string on the peacocks leg to keep it from jumping over a fence? I’ve seen there are like leashes for roosters to keep them from roaming too far away, will this also work on a peacock?

Never put anything they can get tangled up in in the pen they WILL injure themselves. As for wandering off it's a toss up. Some stay for years without any issue, some take off the first chance they get.

In seven years of free-ranging my peas, I have only had one leave but he was being tormented by the damn guineas.
I see, still how much does just making a coop do you think will average? I would rather just not risk it since I have neighbors who have dogs and I wouldn’t want to have him fly off and then risking it. I use to have a peacock that was 2 years old and would pretty much stay in my backyard, but I’m guessing it’s because I had tamed since he was little.

Get a young bird and keep it cooped in a run while you are getting used to each other. Keep it penned for at least a couple of months then let it out for a short while before dark. Always feed it in the pen so it will come back at evening time.

If your neighbors have dogs and there is any chance they will come over to your house keep the bird penned with a sight screen at least 3 feet high around the bottom of the pen.
