Peacock... I really, really want one!

We pen ours in breeding season in closed pens but the rest of the year they are in open top pens. They will in and out but don't go far - they will go out into the fields some but we live back in the woods and our closest neighbors are far away.

Thanks for wishing us luck on the eggs, we have our fingers crossed. I got to thinking about it after ordering the eggs and ordered some chicks just to make sure.

I have always been so taken with peafowl. A neighbor when I was a child, in NY, had some gorgeous peacocks and peahens and he used to let us come over to see them. They're just so breathtakingly beautiful.

We just bought our property last November and got chickens and ducks this year. Next year, I'm getting peafowl.

Steve, good luck with your eggs! I'm so envious. I'm still waiting for hubby to build my duck house and a chicken tractor. There's no way he's going to build a shelter for peafowl this year! LOL

I wasn't aware there were so many varieties until I did some research on them. Amazing!!

My pea cocks roost in the barn and pretty much free range during the day. The male likes to get up on the barn roof or garage roof and makes his calls.

The male likes to pick on roos, he will pick a different one each day and chase it around all day just picking on it all he can. The peahen likes hens with peeps, she wont let them alone, follows them around all day and is just a pest to momma hen. The pea cock does his share of pesting hens with peeps also. I dont know why. They get to doing it so much, we end up penning one or the other up..............

I guess I am all alone, but my Peacocks do free range and they do stay home. However, my nearest neighbor is about .2 mile away.

I want some real bad too. I bought a pair at the Burlington swap a few weeks ago and the female escaped before we could close the coop door. Havent seen her since. so disappointed. I do have two eggs in the bator but not looking so good.

Yes many people free range peafowl. Trick is break young birds, older birds can be also just takes alot more time.

Trouble with free ranging, is you have no control over the breeding. also lose setting females to predaters.
