Peacock mating season - the screaming!!

We had peafowl on the farm I grew up on many years ago in Indiana. We just recently got a male and a female and we ended up putting them in a aviary built on our property. I had forgotten how loud they are. They call when they want to, with a mate or without a mate. With the blue peafowl that we have it gets really bad in March-August. They are beautiful birds and they are extremely loud. We are zoned to have livestock, so it's really not a problem and our neighbors think they are exotic. I have read in old books on peafowl that years ago some people would remove the birds vocal cords. But to me this seems extremely cruel and I would never have anything like that done. Be sure to do your research before getting any kind of critter. But, I had peafowl 35 years ago and I didn't remember how loud they were. Go figure.

We must be coming to the end of mating season because the calling has reduced significantly! Not knowing how long it was going to last for (or if it'll ever stop haha) was probably what prompted me to write this post, because at that point the calling was all day and reguarly during the night. I'm feeling like a far more knowledgable peafowl owner now, but obviously nothing you read can really prepare you for your first mating season.
Now i've moved onto the 'please just stay on my property' fun, which thankfully we're making progress on also :).

I am also a beginning peafowl owner with a 1 & 1/2 year old male/female pair so following your thread has helped me to learn what to expect when they do mature. So far I hardly ever hear my peas making noise but I haven't been thru a breeding season yet. I'm looking forward to getting peahen eggs and possibly some pea chicks...
but not the noise! :barnie

Obnoxious AND loud March - August

I must say that I feel so honoured to have two "most beautiful birds on the Planet" ... I think my two are either young or the peacock is young and inexperienced (he does not mesmorise the peahen much and does not pounce). On the other hand the peahen does not crouch down for the peacock either and seems so disinterested. What makes me think that she could be an older bird, is because when we bought them 18 months ago, she laid an egg within the first few weeks (they were in temporary accommo , a greenhouse, while we were erecting a good and safe enclosure for them). That egg was taken by something, and she has not laid anything since then, that I know of? She could be laying eggs in the bush during the day ... they can get in and out of their newer accommodation via a trap door.
