Hello. I have a pair of in peacocks which are about 2 years old. I've had them four months and they have been penned until about a month ago when I started letting them out. The thing is they wander off. They stay around the yard for a few days roosting in the trees and then off they go up our lane and dissapear. Every time they go they visit the farm over the road, attack their two border collies and sit in one of he barns doing nothing. They've done this a few times so the most recent time I just left them there for the night and the next day I went to find them and they were making their way back home. The question is other than penning one of the two and letting the other out, how do I stop them from wandering. They always have access to food and water and even a 13 acre field but for some reason the I sit on going across the road and terrorising the neighbours dogs. Help!

Wandering is what free range peas do and they can wander for miles once they get comfortable with the area or when they find something they like to visit like you neighbors dog... There is nothing you can do to stop them from wandering beyond caging them all, penning one and not the other(s) is not a guarantee the other(s) will stick around either it might encourage them to sick around temporarily but in time they will start to wander again... Especially now that they know there are 'fun' things to do like terrorize the neighbors dog or if they find people that give them treats or happen to find a garden full of treats...

This can get real bad during mating season, from reports I have heard from local pea owners (mine are all contained) it's not uncommon for them to wander MANY miles looking for mates during breeding seasons, especially if they hear another one sounding off... When I had one at a younger age he had his daily route that he wandered on every day like clockwork, one neighbor said he would come to their back door and sit on the stoop waiting for treats every day...

So it is normal for them to wander and then return whenever they are ready to do so?

Have you any ideas why they may want o attack the neighbours dogs because they are fine with mine?

Mine never have but i train them at an early age to stay in an area within my own property, i have 60 that range on my place at this time but have had as many as 100... I have no close neighbors that they can get to so mabe this is why mine do not leave cause there is no other place they may find their snack when they are gone..

The peas we had when I was younger loved antagonizing and taunting our dog, lucky the dog treated it as playful fun and played along...

I suspect your large pride of peas combined with no neighbors to tempt them probably plays a big part in them not wandering...

There's no way to stop them from wandering, and they may or may not return at all! Looks like you might need to pen them.

I think you are correct that is why posted this, mabe they are in an area with lots of other folks that have bird feeders and such, mine use to try to get over to my daughters across the driveway but it worked with them and they would finely stop, i went threw this with 4 years of babies each time it took alot of time to teach them where not to go, it takes alot of time to train them they can be persistent but so can i and in the end they all stay home, now my daughter and her husband are in their new home and no one is there anymore and i could let them go over there but i won't cause it took so long to teach them not to go there.
