peafowl area

Thats a good size pen for 3 peafowl. My pens are 10 ft by 10ft inside and their outdoor flyways are 10 ft high 40 ft long and 10 ft wide.

All of my peafowl are raised on the ground. They have never been in cages other than for transporting any of them.

Pen size is good as it will support the male in full train and his hens. You can raise your chicks on the ground, some will do just fine. The reason why they are raised on wire for the first part of life is to really limit any exposure to disease, worms and fecal matter. A group of birds in a pen leave droppings everywhere on the ground over the course of time. Peafowl like similar birds will pick at items on the ground, stray bug, scattered food, a tasty looking blade of grass, curiosity etc. Now being confined means that there is a greater concentration of fecal matter that they injest when picking at the food or curious item and for young peafowl this is not good. Peachicks are much more vulnerable to disease than their older companions. Worms also very problematic for peachicks and peafowl in general. The wire allows the dropping to mostly pass through and does not keep scattered food on the floor to pick at. Additionally no worms as they are not on the ground. The cleaner atmosphere generally leads to healthier chicks and greater survival. In the wild or free ranging this is less troublesome as the birds have such a massive area they live in, conversely though they have predators to deal with. Most large breeders raise on wire when starting chicks as far as I know. Good luck.

Here is a link to Leggs Peafowl which covers chick raising and they raise A LOT, LOT, LOT of them. http://www.leggspeafowl.com/peachicks.htm

My breeding pens are 10'X20' 6'high and most of the birds do great in them. I only keep a young pair in them. my larger breeding pens are 30'x20' 6 foot high and i keep my trio in there.
I have a quad in my old chicken coop for the winter and that is 12'x6' inside and 12'x8' outside. there are also 5 pheasants in there all doing great.

For birds with longer trains i would go to 8' or 10' tall. they will enjoy it more. Plus more room to fly around
