Hi,

New to peafowl and was wondering if anyone can recommend a book that shows all the color variations. Right now I have two india blue males, two india blue females (I think) and two pied peahens. The person that sold me the pied peahens said something about being "split". Don't know what that means. I think a good book with pics would really help me out.

Thanks,

Split means the bird has a "gene hidden in them". For an example.. a Blue male that looks normal in every way to your eyes, if he's a split Purple, it means he has the gene. Carries it hidden.

Again for this example, a Blue male split for Purple bred with a Blue hen will produce blue and purple daughters, 50-50 of each. All sons would look normal, but half of them would be split for purple. You can't tell which one is which(for this example).

A lot of the varieties are really a color combined with a pattern(s). For example, Blue is counted as one.. White eyed Blue is counted as another one.. Pied Blue, yet another one.. Pied White eyed Blue is yet another one(notice this one has two patterns- white eye and pied).. and so on through the rest of the patterns(black shoulder, silver pied). Then repeat with another color, say, Purple... rinse, repeat with the patterns added to purple.

Would be nice to have a clear well illustrated book showing them.. so far the best bets are various online pics like linked above and pictures peppered through Peafowl Journals, a bi monthly magazine put out by UPA.
