Okay so first of all...I thought I might see my peafowl matting today and I was right. I was in the pen and heard that matting chase call and looked up to see Dragon (my four year old pied peacock) chase Pip (two year old IB peahen). They matted and poor Alto (two year old peacock) who is so close to Pip (he follows her around, sticks up for her, they preen each other, ect) ran up to see what was going on. He almost seemed sad or something...Poor thing I know he liked her although so did Dragon. Pip is like the guys favorite. She is my favorite too cause she is so short and cute!
Anyways...Hooray this means eggs!
Last year was horrible for hatching eggs...Ice was the only peahen old enough to mate so I got eggs from her, but she didn't set them and the second clutch (three eggs) I tried to incubate but all of them were never even good. This year I am hopping for a better second chance. What is really great is Pip was a hen raised chick. She grew up free-ranging until we bought her as a yearling. Soo I am hopping that she will have better instincts for hatching her own eggs...Anyways that is my theory.
Alright so I should expect her to lay maybe late next week? Okay and also Pied x India blue= Peachicks looking like India blues but carying the pied gene right? Or do they carry the white gene? So wouldn't they have those white flights (that would be so pretty)? Just wondering not trying to say I will get lucky and have chicks this year...
Anyways I hope she uses the nest boxes...Or at least nests under them since she is the only peahen short enough to walk under there.
