OK, I know peafowl can be noisy but I've lived near them and never thought it was bad, Right now in our neighborhood there is a wondering peacock. He only calls few times in the evening. I'll bet if I got him a girlfriend he'd come over.
I have a few questions.
1. Are there types that call less, or have quieter voices?
2. Will they hang around in the yard, once imprinted, like the chickens and duck? Or are the prone to fly away?
* I have a 10 foot exterior fence. I let my chickens and ducks in the yard, they love it. Of course the ducks can fly over the fence and have, but then wait for me to open the gate so they can come back in the yard.
3. Are peafowl aggressive to - me - if I'm really nice to them?

Thanks

1. no

2. They'll claim your yard as their territory, but they generally don't see fences and such as boundaries they'll hop over on a whim if they see something tasty in the next yard. And then they forgot how they got on the wrong side of the fence and will pace back and forth like idiots.

3. I've never met an agressive pea, but if they arent conditioned to human presence they might be fearful and want to keep a distance from you. If you get one as a baby, or that was handled and hand-fed as a baby, it will remain unfearful and generally wish to stick around. No matter how nice you are though, they NEVER want to be handled. My hand-raised babies will tolerate some petting, but they go "buck buck buck buck" to tell me that they'd rather not go down that road.

1- They all make the as much noise as they want when they want.

2- They may hang around your yard and they may not. I have had bad luck. I caught mine wild. So of course they wouldn't hang around. Yours might lead the peahen else where. You never really know. You should keep them penned for 6 months. That way they are used to your yard.

3- I had 2 male peacocks I caught as wild birds. They were aggressive to me, they would fly at me. They wouldn't kick me like a rooster. But they would fly at me if I got to close. Yours should be fine. I have new peacocks coming that were raised from a breeder. So they should be freindly.

If you got him in your 10 foot fence and you could Clip one of his wings feathers off (talk to someone if you don't know how)...
If he doesn't have access to jump up on branches and jump out ect...He may stick around if he knows you feed him well by time his new Feathers grew back in.

Peafowl Wing Clipping

Hold the bird with a firm grip on both legs.

Open up the wing to be clipped to expose

the flight feathers.

Wire cutters or sharp scissors are used to

cut the feathers.

Cut one feather at a time, using the small

tertiary feathers as a guide.

Use the tertiary feathers as a guide to prevent

cutting too close to the wing bone.

Continue cutting across the wing.

Clip only one wing on each bird.
Wing feathers will grow back in 4-5 months.

Thats us a great idea DeerFarmer....

hi,if you got them as babies, then they will stay around.
clipping their wings, will help, but if they want to roam,NOTHING WILL STOP THEM!!
mine have been here since they were day old.
the fence is only 4 feet, and they show NO signs or wish to go over it!!!.
they did fly off their high perch, into the surrounding yards!!,but i think this was due to the lack of co ordinationon thier part!!!.
after clipping thier wings, they seem more stable!!!

Agree with Gaza on the roaming... unless you've got them penned they will roam if they want to regardless of your fencing. I clipped all the primaries from my first peafowl (every single one, and you're only supposed to do a couple, but I wanted to be SURE he was not flying anywhere) and put him in the chicken pen where there are 6 foot walls with boards lipping the top (like making an overhang so they can't jump up at the fence and fall over or something stupid).... and he just flat out jumped it. Didn't even open his wings.

Thank you all for great responses. (My ducks would fly over the 10ft fence and would quack at me to let them in the gate.)

I think I might go for it. One female, one male. I'll stay away from the green ones, keep them in the pen for until they're grown, and I won't hold the male too much. I think a very tall little coup might be in order. The chickens have their own coup but not tall enough for a long tail.
Aren't they like living gardens? So pretty. That peacock in the neighborhood calls every night, just a few. I like it, not 10 of them, that would do me in.

Thanks again. You're all such nice people, and clearly love your birds!

Good luck I hope you get some pretty peafowl!

Yes they are like living lawn ornaments and make for great photos!
