peafowl noise

I do not have peacocks yet but I am really wanting them but I'm afraid of exactly how bad I'm going to piss off my neighbors, is it a bad idea or is the noise something that's just here and there?

The more peafowl you have the more noise you will have. If you keep your numbers down the noise shouldn't be too bad. Peacocks call during the breeding season which is during the spring and summer time. Other than that they are usually very quiet unless if they see a hawk fly over or see a predator then they might start honking. I can't really say how often the peacock(s) will call. Mine call every now and then but not non stop. Some people might have birds that call more than mine. If you have more than one peacock when one peacock starts calling sometimes all the other males will chime in and then that can be pretty loud depending on how many males you have. Visiting any peafowl breeder with at least 10 males during breeding season will give you a good idea of what the noise can get like. I find the guineas at one peafowl breeder's place to be much noisier and annoying than the peafowl - but I am not a guinea person!

People often say that they are worried about bothering their neighbors. It is best to go talk to your neighbors, educate them on peafowl and invite them to come see your peafowl once you get them and that should hopefully make them okay with you getting peafowl. You will find that some people have very negative connotations when it comes to peafowl. Birdrain on here was recently talking about how a lot of kids at his school think that peafowl are mean and he wants to show them that most peafowl are really nice. Another popular connotation is that they are very annoyingly loud. While peafowl can be loud, I do not think their noise is annoying. Some people have never really heard a peafowl call in person, so they just go off of what other's say about them being annoying.

With peafowl I believe that penned peafowl are the best way to go if you want the least amount of noise. I have one wild peacock and a few penned peafowl. My wild peacock is like roosters, calls almost all day and night and very often. My penned peafowl on the other hand are quiet and call the first moment I let them out and then maybe every hour or 2 hours and it's just a few honks. My rooster calls more and longer time than my peafowl.

Lots of people have been associating peafowl with aggression. Peafowl don't attack unless they have to. You hear about the attacks usually at a zoo. I would ask the zookeepers why they got rid of their peacock and it seems to be a similar story each time. Peacock had it's wings clipped, can't fly away, kids pull train feathers, peacock gets tired of having feathers pulled and goes aggressive. If you treat peafowl with the respect they deserve they are very friendly. I was able to change a few kids minds about peafowl. The kids believed that peafowl were aggressive. I showed them that they can be friendly when handled properly and treated with respect. Peahens can become aggressive if you mess with their babies, they are just trying to be a good parent.
