Peafowl Noob...

Take this how how you want..... I have 7 peafowl, 50 chickens and over a dozen turkey. Half my peafowl are in the chicken pen. The other half in the turkey pen. Its been that way for over t years now. Never had anybody die or get sick in any way. Never treated any bird for illness. Never lost a bird other than a predator. All my birds are beautiful healthy birds.

That's great but I think every flock is different, I read that chickens are pretty much immune to Black head and ducks, geese, and pheasants are completely immune but all these birds can still carry the disease. I read that the only birds that get killed by Blackhead are Turkeys and Peafowl. So I need to find out if my chickens and ducks are carrying black head, if they are then they will pass it to any peafowl or turkey and that will kill them. So I think i'm going to get a few turkeys to test if my flock is carrying black head before the peachicks arrive. Hopefully my flock does not have it.

Blackhead is treatable if you catch it soon enough.

How do you treat it? All the articles I read said it was not... If I treat it then will the peafowl get it again?

Treatment is metronidazole or other drug in same family to treat the actual blackhead protozoa.

Secondary infections also need to be treated. I use Baytril.

And last but not least, the cecal worm needs to be treated with Safeguard or Valbazen.
