I found a peafowl lying in the coop and her leg is either broken or dislocated at the hip. I have no idea how this happened. I have had her separated in a box for 5 weeks and she is slowly starting to move around the box, but not standing or trying to stand. She eats and drinks. Will she ever be able to rejoin the flock. Will she ever be able to stand on the one good leg and balance?

Welcome to BYC. Can you see a vet to get an xray? Do you have any pictures of her or her leg? @casportpony is very familiar with peafowl, so hopefully she can be of help. In birds, a broken bone in the hip can be very hard to treat or splint. If it is dislocated, a vet might be able to help.

no i don't. i will try to take one. No avian vets around me. where is dr pol when you need him?

I have been unable to take a pic that really shows anything. I tried to put her back outside and she was brutally attacked by the two males. Is this behavior because they view her as an intruder into the flock, or because they view her as ill and vulnerable, or are they establishing their pecking order

It could be because she has been out of the flock for more than a few days, but others will attack her if they sense or notice that she is disabled. Keeping her in a dog crate near the flock would be a way of getting them familiar with them, but I have a recovered hen who has never been accepted back into the flock. Is she walking better or has she been injured worse? I will tag @casportpony again in case she has suggestions.

Welcome to BYC!

My experience has been that injuries up that high are very hard to treat. My best results have been when I keep them in a small enclosure away from other animals, and sometimes they will have to spend many weeks like this.

Is she able to walk yet?

She has been moved to her own pen with a doghouse inside so she can get in at night or during storms. The last three days i have actually seen her standing up on both legs...however her good foot is standing on the bad foot so she can't walk (yet)

Glad that she is standing. I would try some human B complex vitamins 1/2 tablet daily crushed on some food or egg to help her legs.

she is able now to stand but hops and flounders to move around. When she stands, you can see she is standing on her bad foot with her good foot.

Sorry that she is still having problems, but glad that she can stand. Is she still by herself or can she be around the others without getting hurt?
