Peahen bleeding, swollen throat area

The inside of her mouth should look like this:

Well we administered some penicillin this morning and are just keeping an eye on her. The swelling actually seems a little better than last night and my husband said she did eat a bit of cat food too on her own. I think I administered the penicillin correctly using that photo above, but maybe went a bit too fast. She shook her head a lot after the administration, but right now she is roosting on top of their house with her mate.

Injectable penicillin? If so, that needs to be given by injection because penicillin is not absorbed well orally. Injectable penicillin dose is 0.15 ml per pound once a day in the breast muscle.

It’s called Pen G. I spoke with a professor of agriculture at the local college who said to give 1/2 cc of it orally so that’s what we did. We mixed it with a bit of pedialyte in the syringe. Here’s a photo of the swelling last night and this morning, and the inside of her mouth which appeared to be fine. Not sure why the throat area swelled so much, but it appears to be going down. Probably should have just left her alone since she did eat a little. I just hope I administered it correctly as there are lots of scary stories about aspiration, but it’s been 1.5 hours since we gave it to her and she seems ok. Just chillin out there and more active than yesterday for sure. Thanks so much everyone for your help. I’ll keep you updated

Glad she's better. Good news is that even if she did aspirate a little it's only Pedialyte and penicillin, so probably won't hurt her.

My vet is the one that told me not to give injectable penicillin orally, and I think it's one of the few injectables that shouldn't be given orally, but do what makes you most comfortable. :)

Oh gosh, I’m glad to hear she should be ok. I’ve been kicking myself. I’m at that point where you know how you plug your symptoms into WebMD and get told you have everything from cancer to an ingrown toenail? Lol that’s how I feel trying to help this poor girl. The feed store did give us needles, so I will research that a bit for future reference. I think if she continues to heal we will leave her alone and just keep an eye on her.
