Hello everyone!
I am new to this group. I am hoping someone can assist me with my peahen. I first noticed she was sick last week Sunday. She appeared to have a one eye cold (I read about this cold in the group).
Symptoms one week ago:
- One eye closed, I did get a little eye goop out of her eye.
- Periodically open and closing mouth
- she does not seem congested
Her apx weight is 8# (per my husband). I gave her oral doxy the first 2 days. I saw no improvement and switched to oral Cipro for 4 days. Because our temps are in the 30,40 degree range I did offer her a heat lamp.
Fast forward to today. I did not give any antibiotics today. Her eye seems better but I do see a cloud. I do not hear congestion when she breathes. She does still periodically open and closing her mouth. on byc I read about Worms. She does not appear to have worms, but I am not certain so today I gave her 1cc of oral safeguard goat wormer.
From what I see she is only drinking what I syringe her. She stopped eating on Thursday. So that is 4 days now. I offered her all her favorites, broccoli, spinach, cabbage and corn. Today she ate 4 pieces of corn.
tonight she is near the heat lamp in straw. I feel like I am going to loose her.
I am looking for your experience! Please i am open to your suggestions! I really want to save her!
Thank you

Can you take a very closeup pic of that side of the face and one of just the eye? I'd like to see this 'cloud'. Peas with respiratory infections respond to tylan 200 best, we give 1.5ml SQ for five days. The dosage for the SG is 2.0ml, one day will get roundworms and cecal worms, repeat in ten days. To get the rest of the worms give it for five days and repeat again in ten days. Your hen sounds to be in a bad way, can you tube feed it food and water? She should be taking in 120 to 180 ml of feed and water per day minimum.

Hello! I wanted to check on her this morning before I reply, she is still laying in the same spot by the heat lamp!
Yes, I will get a close up picture of her eye today. I only want to catch and handle her once today to keep stress as least as possible. I do not know how to tube feed or I would do so 😢. If I can figure out how to tube feed should I make a mash out of her pellets and tube feed that with probiotic/electrolyte water? Would I use a tube similar to a fish tank? Do feel I should give her 2cc dose of safeguard today? I am also debating on starting the doxy again, what do you think? I do not have tylan 😞 I forgot to mention I gave her a dose of meloxicam yesterday. I was hoping that would make her feel better.
My resources are very limited due to the pandemic, I am in New York and our state is closed Until 3/15/2020 at the earliest.

thank you so much for responding I am very worried about her

@casportpony has a tutorial on how to tube feed, lots of good pics and details. It is imperative that she starts getting nourishment. The meloxicam is what made her feel better and get up and move around but it is not going to cure her. She needs a better antibiotic or you might be underdosing, I don't know. People have been getting Tylan 200 on-line, I would get that ordered asap. Also order some Kaytee Baby Bird Food for tube feeding. In the meantime you can make a slurry and try feeding her with a turkey baster, it must be very watery. She must have fluids first then a while later after it has cleared the crop you can give her the slurry. Handling her is causing less harm than her going downhill and dying. Contain her in a small space with a heat source so she is around 85*.

Here is a photo of her eye today

That is an excellent photo! Now, seeing that I do not see any sign of illness or any problem with the eye. Are there any other signs you have seen that lead you to think she is suffering with a respiratory illness? Any mucus in the nostrils or in the mouth? Any coughing or sneezing or head shaking? Droopy wings? Perhaps it just wormy. I re-read your first post and I am not seeing anything evident in the pic.

Hello!
She does not seem like she has mucus. I do not see mucus nor does she sound raspy when she breathes.
She does have her wings dropped but I think this is because she is getting weaker. She does open and close her mouth randomly, but it is not a frequent movement. Yesterday I gave 1cc of safeguard again.
her eye did improve over the past few days the cloud was much bigger.
Thank you so much!

I need to add when this all started a little over a week ago. It was her only her eye that I noticed she was sick. She was not opening her eye, then as I gave the antibiotics only her membrane stayed closed. Yesterday she had the membrane open and the spot has gotten better. But she unfortunately is not better!
I worm my birds every spring and fall. My male is fine he shows no signs of illness.
When I open her mouth should it seem dryer it’s have like a film of mucus? I ask because I touched her tongue and she does have a film of mucus in her mouth. I thought I should mention this. Thank you again
