Hello, so I have recently acquired a black shouldered India blue peahen. I just went to check on her and I think my male India blue peacock is picking on her. The back of her neck is red/bloody but she acts normal. Is this a mating thing or is he trying to hurt her? Her back looks like when my roosters would mount my hens, all ruffled.

Welcome To BYC

I don't know much about Peafowl, but hopefully those that do can chime in with some tips and suggestions. @KsKingBee @Midnightman14 @casportpony

In the meantime, if you can post photos of your hen, her injuries and housing, it may help them once they are online. (Load us up with some photos, we like them :) )

Again, I don't know much about Peafowl, but if you feel the male is injuring the hen, best to err on the side of caution and separate them for a day or two. Hopefully those with experience in caring for Peafowl can guide you on this too.

A bit more information would help us help you. Where do you live? Breeding season is over here in the States but you may be down under where the season is underway. How old is the cock? Young cocks are like teenagers with raging hormones and can be aggressive. When introducing a hen it is best to move the cock to the hen's pen so he does not try to protect his territory from the new addition. Hiding spaces for the hen can be helpful and sight barriers from nearby cocks is a good idea as the cock can take out his frustration on his hen.
