Peahen with pneumonia

You can mix the Kaytee baby bird feed with Pedialyte instead of water if you like. The easiest way to hold a mature pea when tube feeding is to kneel over the bird as in Kathy's turkey video, pinning it right between your legs, hold the syringe in your mouth to insert the tube and once the tube is in the crop use that hand to squeeze the plunger or hold the syringe and push with your chin.

thank you, I will see if I can get some off Amazon. The second round of water went very easy. I didn't have any trouble at all. She is getting used to being handled. Under the arm is the way for me to go, I cannot kneel as I am partially disabled. She weighs six pounds, so any ideas on how much and how often I should feed her.?

She weighs ~2730 grams
*Minimum* total water per day = 136.5 ml, I might want to double that in some.
Safe amount to tube = 82 ml per feeding

Thank you, she was actually 6.25 pounds and I calculated 84 ml. I was careful to watch and make sure none was coming back up. She made it through the night again, is still gasping but it does seem easier than yesterday. Thank you for giving me a daily minimum that helps with knowing how often to give to to her water. Ordered the Kaylee baby bird food, but it won't be here until tomorrow. It has been at least 4-5 days since she has eaten. I do have a ninja and can literally fine powder her food and add to water if waiting until tomorrow is an issue for food.

Another good alternative is cat food, I bought it in little jars and is already pureed and easy to water down so it goes through the tube. If you can not get down on the floor, (I too am getting less flexible), the best way to contain the bird is to wrap her in a towel with her legs straight back and her head exposed. That way you can lean over her on a table while you use both hands to administer the feeding.

@AugeredIn has some great videos of wrapping his birds to give oral meds with a gavage needle. If he does not respond go to his web site Tall Tails dot com.
I do have some pureed type cat food I could add some, but not sure what flavor to choose. Sorry for the confusion between lavage and gavage. I have that straight now. You all have been so incredibly helpful. Time to go give her water again. Sometimes Amazon gives you a delivery day and it gets here early, hoping that is the case. I have a lot of stuff in the pantry and a way to make it a find powder if anyone has a recipe for her. She is fairly old.

The flavor of the cat food does not matter if you are tubing it to her, getting protein into her is the important part and if she hasn't eaten in four days it is very important to get some nourishment into her asap.
She got her water with catfood and pills this morning. I think she is improving but it is by infinitesimal amounts.
