Peahen with possible broken leg

So vet diagnosed an actual broken leg (showed me on the X-ray) and said she could fix with surgery. I’d have to keep her crated 4-6 weeks until she’s healed. She said she could also put a cast on it but it may not work and then surgery wouldn’t be an option. Does this sound like a normal course of treatment? Have you had birds with broken legs before, and if so what did you do for them?
I have had broken lower legs on three birds and had the vet cast the first one and I did the other two. The thigh is a whole different ball of string that I would not attempt. Birds bones will heal in a short time, two to three weeks and the cast can come off. The problem with immobilizing a bird is the loss of muscle. I would weigh the cost of the vet against the cost of the bird and make my decision from there.
