Banning peanuts is beyond reason.. Cause then you have to ban sweets cause of hyperglycemia an ban tomatoes for the kid that has a allergy to them an on an on. A school of a thousand + would have to bad every food in the world.

Contrary to popular belief not everyone can teach, if everyone could teach we wouldn't have half these problems. But the truth of the matter is after making sure all the little ones are safe and actually there there is teaching, some are great at this, some good, and a tiny percentage that are employed as teachers are poor.

There are no schools for severe allergies- so now what?
What if to keep the house and feed their child they don't have time to stay at home 24/7?
What if- they never received a good education themselves for whatever reason, or have a LD (learning disability) of some type? Can you imagine someone with even one of the common forms of dyslexia teaching reading?
I get what you're saying, I really do. But at what point did it stop being the parents responsibility to make sure their child succeeds and became everyone else's? I'm sorry, but I want my children to be the best that they can be. If they are better than another child, that should not be my problem. This child will eventually have to enter society as an adult, will an entire workplace have to change to accomodate one individual? When will it be enough?
It usually begins when school ends. The point of the public school system is to ensure everyone gets the same shot at an education. Everyone deserves a chance to be educated no matter their disadvantages.
Including distant, uncaring parents, peanut allergies, dyslexia, and so on.
Many children with these problems become adults that contribute great things to society.
How many advances in society that we all benefit from would we have missed out on, if we had ruthlessly invested in the human form of culling in the education system because it inconveniences other people's children? What happened to to the societal contract we all make to help each other out when needed?

i have 2 grandchildren - 1 has severe nut allergies, and the other is gluten intolerant. i totally believe that the schools have an obligation to block all nuts from school and take measures to make every child safe. Children can be and are mean at times, and some may use nuts as a weapon against another child -it is like taking a loaded gun to school!
a child with allergies cannot go to most restaurants or movies - they should at least have the schools as a safe place to be. i see the family struggling with this every day of the year and the kids will always have their allergies.

A rash may occur where the skin is touched by peanut butter but a dangerous reaction will not result
unless the peanut butter enters the mouth, nose, or eyes.
The rash will get better when washed with soap and water, and when Benadryl
is given.
Just smelling peanut butter will not cause an allergic reaction because there is no peanut protein
in an odor.

I don't know enough about peanut allergies to say one way or another there, but if it is bad enough that the smell or touch can set off a sever aniphelatic (spelling?) attack then it should be banned, if not then no. So yes I can say which is sever or not. One reaction is life threatening, the other is annoying. Like I assert in almost everything I write, moderation in everything, reasonable compromise is the key, and approaching something with a level head is the best way to do things.

some people are so allergic to peanuts that if one person in the back of a commercial airliner opens a bag, the allergic person in the front, will go into anaphylactic shock, and die. My son is allergic, but only if he ingests or it touches his skin. His teacher has the kids at his table who ate peanut butter for lunch, wash their hands well with soap. we haven't ever had an issue at school because of it. An anaphylactic reaction, especially one that may be airborne, is much more serious, than an intolerance, like to dairy. And if you think it's the same thing, then you need to educate yourself.
edited to add: what do you think an odor is? It's tiny molecules of a substance, airborne. when you smell poo? that is because you now have poo in your nose. and Yes, just the smell of some things can cause a life threatening reaction.

I didn't read all the posts, but I just want to say that I feel very bad for people with such severe allergies. It has to make life more complicated and difficult at times. Take care of yourselves!

My son has a heart condition that will prevent him from doing a lot of physical activity in school. he may not be able to partipate in gym class fully, and will have to either sit out or go the ot library instead. Fair? Yes. Heartbreaking as his mother? Yes. But it is TRULY UNFAIR to make 26 other children not do physical activity to accomodate one child's condition!!
I am sorry that your son cannot participate, but imagine if his classmates doing exercise near him would cause him to die... i bet you'd really want them to not do that. the peanut thing isn't to make the allergic kid feel better "I can't eat peanuts, so Nobody can eat peanuts".... it's to prevent horrible consequences. It's the school's job to do what it can to prevent terrible accidents and death. Legally speaking, it is much easier for the school to mandate a peanut free classroom, than to deal with the aftermath of Billy's lunch killing Suzy.
