I used peat moss with my brooder and found it to be incredibly dusty. I prefer pine shavings. I don't know how big your coop is, but 10 bales might be a lot...

And I put my food/water (they're in cereal bowls) on overturned flower pots to keep shavings/poo out.

Well if I could find bales of peat moss for $2.00 I'd be in heaven. It's expensive here and though I only use it for my garden that's an excellent deal and you can always store it.

I bought some too from my local feed store back in Feb when I picked up my first chicks. Loved it in the brooder until they started scratching. It would end up everywhere. The chicks also loved to dust bath in it. It did seem to dry out the poo as well.

I switched to pine shavings and then wood pellets. In my coop, I have horse stall bedding (chunky saw dust), wood pellets, aspin shavings, and stall dry.

The peat moss is great for the garden, putting a little when you plant your annuals, or repotting house plants. They go crazy.

I was gonna say that peat is one of the prime ingredients for making better soil in the garden. Along with compost and manure, it is one part of the Holy Trinity of Soil Amendment.

$2 per huge square is awesome!
