I have never had a problem with pecking before, but today I let the chickens out late, because some dogs were running about and I was afraid for my flock.
When I opened the door, one of my sweet little young Buff Orpingtons, hatched out by me in my incubator, came walking blindly out. She had been horribly pecked, no eyes left, it was just dreadful.
I went and got my 22 handgun and came out and shot her, but I feel just terrible. I don't know why they did it, unless it was because I was late letting them out.
This has been a bad week anyway, as a raccoon got my lovely Peahen earlier.
I feel as if I am a terrible chicken Mom to let this happen.
