Pecked in the eye by a chicken??

The chicken in my avatar grabbed my glasses off my face and ran away with them. I was reaching for every brown chicken I could barely see until I found them. I had another chicken claw me in the eye. She tried to fly on my head and her foot missed. My eye hurt for two days after.

This is what my half-blind, Buff Orpington, Oprah, did to my niece. She forgave her.

I've been pecked once in each eye. The first time meant a scratched cornea and antibiotic ointment for the eye. The 2nd time wasn't so bad, but it's not something I want to repeat again. People always think it's so cute when chicks sit on your shoulder, and it is for a couple of weeks. Then they get big and curious and can really, really do some damage.

I really had no idea that this was such a problem. Makes me think more than twice about the friendly chickens.

I blame it on their dinosaur DNA.

I mean, they're not that smart, and to them, everything is food unless proven otherwise, so why should my eyes be any different? They probably look like grapes to them. The second time I got pecked, she was going after my earring and I just happened to turn my head at the exact wrong moment. This is why I try to warn newbies who just love to have their chickens sit on their shoulders that it will backfire painfully on them.

I have a half-blind buff orpington too!! It's a small world. She's never pecked my eye, but the other day when I was doing some fence work she would NOT leave my hands alone. I sported red peck marks for a few days.

I am legally blind in my left eye thanks to a chick. I was little and under adult supervision at the time. It just happened too fast for anyone to stop it. This is why I always advise people not allow young children around chickens at all.
