Pecking eggs

Over the last couple of weeks, something has made one or more of my chickens peck and break eggs. Why ? What can I do?

Are the shells thin...and thus easily broken?
Are they eating them?
What all and how exactly are you feeding?
How old are these birds?

There' a mix of ages, but all have been together at least a year. The shells aren' too thin generally. They may be being eaten....i don't think anything else is getting in but there are rats around ....
