Pecking my hand. Do I discipline a chicken?

These are “birds”. Be careful what you do with your hands. Your hands can be safe zone or you can “train them to fear your hand. I found a gentle push or holding up five fingers does the trick. I have one bird that wants to sit on me all the time. This is kind of inconvenient when you are standing up.

So, I hold up the five fingers in her face and she goes away.

Your hands should not provoke fear in your birds. These are not dogs and cats. If you want to be macho and smack’em….then, you will get fear-based animals. But then some people like that.

Chickens have “beaks” beaks are hard. Bear up people! These could be chicken kisses for all you know.

Yelling ouch sometimes works! Loud protests are understood. My birds respond to the baby crying next door and they become very distressed.

Dogs barking in the neighborhood bring on many looks of concern.

The first one they look at is me and if I am OK with it….they are OK.

I agree with Ladyhawke1- My girls will peck at my hands if they think I might have a treat (I hand feed them all the time...) I just show them both hands, palms out and fingers spread, so they can clearly see there is nothing there, and they lose interest. I don't want them to fear my hands, since I want to be able to handle them easily.
