I have three 5 month old pullets, RIR, A-LORP, BLACK STAR, and a 6 month old Wellsummer ROO. The black star seems to be the leader, and the RIR is second in command.
I got these pullets from a lady a month ago, today i got a EE, same age as the pullets i already have from the same lady, when i got her home, the black star and the RIR began to peck her constantly in the head, then she ran off near my rooster, and he bit her in the neck, so i got her out, and put her in a separate cage with food and water.
how long does this pecking order last????? my roo is a calm roo, but i dont know what got into him, ive also read other stories on this forum on other EE hens always being picked on.
I know that "PECKING ORDER" is a normal thing with chickens, but i just couldnt stand seeing her being pecked like that, what can i do?????????
I have her in a cage with food and water inside the coop with them , but they cant get to her.

She may have to endure the pecking for a full week. It's what they do and unless she fights back, she'll remain on the bottom of the order.

I have read it is never a good idea to introduce one chicken at a time. I always add several at a time. try putting something on the pecked spot they don't like the smell of castor oil or citonella oil? Might deter them from her. Just a drop

I put a bantam hen in with my polish and they tormented her. I put her in a wire cage inside the covered pen with them. After some days I would put her to roost with them and they would let her roost but would start picking on her again in the morning so I would separate her again. Eventually they got to where they would not pick on her but it took a couple weeks. I had given up and was going to build her a separate pen. I was working on it and looked over and there she was on the ground amongst them all! I put places in the pen for her to get away from them. Places to hide behind and things to get up out of their reach. I had begun to feel sad for her that she could never get her feet in the sand too but now all is well.

I added two 8 week old pullets in with our 15 week old polish pullts around 3 weeks ago it was hard to watch them get chased and pecked by frow the dominant pullet in the pen. I even had to smack her down once or twice, which didnt work any how. It became less and less frequent as time went by though, you need to leave her in there even though it is hard to watch. Or you get another one the same age let them be together for awhile then put them in together that way they at least have each other to ride out the pecking order with, plus you get one more chicken ( win win). Luck to ya!
