We have 6 khaki campbell ducks we hatched this spring; 3 males, 3 females. 2 of the males just "sprouted" their drake feathers and one of them is constantly going after the other now. The one that is acting dominant always chases the other away from the flock anytime he gets near. Is this a "pecking order" phase? Or, should I expect this to continue or even get worse? If it came down to getting rid of one of them, I am curious of people's thoughts on this: the one acting dominant is larger than the other, but we like the coloring of the less dominant one better, though he is smaller - for breeding/genetics, is it better to keep the larger one or the one we want to see pass down his coloring despite his smaller stature?

Based on general guidelines, the better drake to duck ratio is 1 to 3, even 1 to 6 - so there is going to be fierce competition now the drakes are sexually mature.

Separating them is a short term solution - more females or rehoming the drakes is the longer term solution.

I had heard about that ratio before, but then there are some poeple on herre who have said they have a much higher male-to-female ratio with no problem. One gal told me she has 30 ducks and half are males... Hers are Call Ducks though, so maybe breed makes a difference, Well I guess we're going to have to start figuring out how we're going to go about getting rid of a male or two.
