Pecking order

If you are having picking and bullying your birds are telling you there isn't enough room. If they were picking on birds they already knew, adding complete strangers will go even worse.

How big in feet is your coop and run? People often follow the rule of 4 square feet for a coop and 10 for the run per bird but many times it isn't enough. I recommend doubling or tripling those recommendations for a peaceful flock.

Thanks guys! I have one perch that is 6 rows high at 6ft and 5ft across, I have the space to add another medium perch and a small perch. I do not have a problem with poop as I clean out the 6 inches of hay I leave in there every couple of weeks and add it to the compost I keep in the back of their run that provides them with plenty of worms. I don't mind this, as I find it therapeutic.

What you said about them being in the coop while they are awake, I fear I may not be opening them up early enough. The pecking is not bad, there is no blood or massive loss of feathers, only 3 of the 30 are missing some feathers on the back of their head and few on their wing and back area.

I am in Colorado and notice they do not mind being outside pretty much all day even in snowy weather, or rain. They also have shady areas to hang out in the run on a hot day. So they are basically only sleeping in the coop (except in the morning hours!).

I have 30 chickens because I am just chicken crazy and love all of their different personalities so much! I also have a family of 7 and the eggs never go to waste! I have 27 different breeds, and have them all named :). When I observe them in the run (and I do this a lot) there are no real problems between them, or any particular bullies. They do their normal fighting over a worm on occasion, normal chicken behavior. But nothing that singles out even the ones with missing feathers. The oldest chickens are 2 years and the youngest are 9 months, they come from 4 different groups of chicks.
