Pecking

Is this from pecking? We just took over a few chickens from our neighbors when they moved this week and I noticed this ball patch around one neck of one of them.

Just want to be sure what I’m dealing with.

That would be my guess. You can see the feathers are already starting to grow back. I'd still check for mites, though. Check around the perimeter of the bald area, right against the skin and feather shafts. Do the same thing around the neck and vent. You're looking for either the bugs themselves, or their eggs and crap (which will look like buildup on the feather shafts).
