I apologize if this is in the wrong section, it has to do with behavior, but also could be misidentified gender.

I have a white crested polish chicken, Nova, that we're fairly sure is female (curved, fluffy hairdo, no crest). Both genders are suppose to have wattles and hers are coming in, but I was told that was normal. She's starting to cluck. But Nova will make these sounds like the beginning part of a high pitch crow. I can never get it on camera because she seems to only do it when she realizes someone is home in the house and wants to be let out of the coop. She never does it outside the coop.

I'm in city limits so if she is a he or continues to make this noise, I'll have to get rid of Nova. Is there a way to dissuade this type of behavior if Nova is a female?

Here's pictures from 9 weeks. All of the chicken's seem to be growing a bit faster this year by a few weeks.

Really? Even for this breed? Both genders seem to get red wattle. But Nova has the rounded crest and no comb...

I hope it's not a roo other wise I have to find my fav chicken a new home... :(

if nova is starting to Crow I'm sorry but I'd also agree he is a male. I'm so sorry! I went through this myself and had to re home two of my birds
because they started to Crow and were males so I know how you feel! again I'm so sorry.

Thanks for your responses!

It's not a real crow though. It's not throaty. It could be because Nova is trying to learn, but Nova only does it after she/he hears the alarm going off or when we get home from work to be let out of the coop. Nova most definitely competes as the dominant female (if she is a she). I've read that some females will make a high pitch partial crow or honk.

I guess I won't truly know until Nova is bigger, but in the mean time, I want to be hopeful because I love that stupid david bowie/einstein hair.

Does anyone have a dominant female that makes noise? And how do you get them to not be so noisy?

Realsis- did you have crested polish? What age did your birds crow?

hi both my roos were silkies . one started to crow at 4 months the other started to crow at 5 months and almost had me fooled thinking he was a hen. I was very attached to my birds. one was so very sweet the other was sweet to but then started aggressive behavior. it really broke my heart that I had to go through this twice at separate times but I can't have roosters either in my neighborhood. usually you can find a 4H family looking for birds for their children and birds like silkies and polish can be easily shown and the 4H is eager to take them to raise. that's where mine went. I still think of them today but it had to be done and with a 4H family you know they will be loved and cared for. I just called my local 4H chapter and told them my situation and they took the birds two separate times to give to a nice family.if you do have to re home him that's an idea for you
but if he's starting to crow he's surely a boy
when they first start crowing its kind of a pitiful attempt but trust me they get better at it pretty fast. I'm really sorry for your situation but do know how you feel. if you ever need to talk I'll be here to listen. good luck

I had a Polish Roo that had smaller wattles and rounded crest... just like yours! I thought for sure was a hen, Then i heard him crow and sure enough the saddle feathers came in :( I ended up selling him and now I'm afraid his sister may be a Roo too!! Se has a rounded crest and no wattles but seems to have saddle feathers and is starting to get metallic feathers...

Hope yours is a Pullet!

Boo. Nova's only 10 weeks now... fairly young!

I just don't want Nova to go to a home to be killed because it's a pretty bird and face it, not good for the crockpot!

Do most roosters crow just for attention and not to announce morning/twilight? Nova sounds like Eeergh!
