Peeling skin on face and ear

View attachment 1928745 Thank you. I will check it out. I brightened the photo so it’s easier to see her ear. I did of course immediately warm wash her face this am so she could open her eyes. And I did apply Neosporin to her ear and face. When I returned from work the “crud” seems to be coming from the eyes. But I imagine it must be from the ears as well as there’s no real wetness to either. Just crusty mucous build up. Seems like an upper respiratory infection for sure, like you mentioned. But can that come from mites? I’m guessing in my layman experience it’s just a coincidence that I found mites? I also cleaned out the entire coup and then treated it and my sick silky with food grade diatomaceous earth.
Thank you for re-doing the photo!:)
So the crud is still coming back and her eye is glued together overnight? Is it just on one side or is the other side like this too?
I would work on getting that crusty stuff off. For the ear, apply 1 drop peroxide, then remove the crud, sometimes it may come out like a plug. If the eyes are also getting crusty, flush them well with saline removing any debris and apply an eye ointment like Terramycin or you can use plain Neosporin.
I would still look inside the beak for mucous, yellow or white patches or canker.
If you feel that it's respiratory illness, then you can try an antibiotic like Tylosin to see if that makes a difference, but the crusty stuff and gunk in the ear still needs to be removed. Tylan50 seems to be hard to find, if you have that on hand, you can use that, if not then order Tylosin online. https://www.jedds.com/shop/tylan-soluble-100-g/

For lice and mites, it would be best to use a Permethrin based poultry spray or dust. DE is not that effective and a respiratory irritant.
I would also give her a direct dose of poultry vitamins that contain Vitamin A a couple of times a week. Poultry Cell would be a good choice for that.

Thanks all as always. Her eyes weren't glued this am, i'm guessing the face and ear cleaning along with the neosporin helped. I did the same this morning. There was still the crud that needed to be cleared and picked away but it wasn't nearly as bad as yesterday. So the slight improvement feels like a triumph. I will need to order the products mentioned as the food grade Diatomaceous earth was all I had on hand and unfortunately the feed store that I have locally did not have anything to treat mites or lice other than that as well. The pains of city living, not many people have chickens. Also, she for sure has mites and not lice. And both sides are the same. I looked inside her beak this morning and didnt see anything abnormal. I am currently 4 months pregnant so I also have to be sure to administer anything I do to her very cautiously. Even with the DE being food grade, I applied it with a mask and gloves.

Most Tractor Supply stores have either the Martins or Gordons in 8 ounce bottles and up. Those can be mixed with water and used in a spray bottle on chickens, or in a garden sprayer to treat the coop and facilities once bedding is removed. There also is a garden dust that is also permethrin and sold is certain aisles. I just walk around and look at shelves, since it might be in the cattle, horse, or goats aisles.

Oh Congratulations!
Sounds like you are making progress on clearing the gunk away and cleaning out the ear.
Ugggh, oh boy, mites can cause some problems for sure. Do you have a helper than can apply Permethrin spray for you? If not, wear gloves and I think I would wear a mask too. I wear a mask often, chickens are dusty anyway.

Thank you! I imagine I could coax my husband to apply it. Aside from myself, my concern is the poor girl will likely be very stressed from him handling her. The chickens are kinda my deal and he admires and enjoys them from afar and for the eggs.

It might stress her a little, but chickens acclimate pretty well. This is a good time to get him used to them too (and they him)! ;) Won't be long you will have a precious baby to take care of and it would be good if Hubby is comfortable helping out with the chickens, even for just a short period of time.

Right you are, no doubt about it!
