Yesterday my dad's Aunt had a Birthday Party, she is 90. She lives right behind our property so unfortunately I am one of the youngest on my dad's side so I was getting pretty bored and things started quieting down a little and some of my relatives where interested in talking to me about peafowl so I decided to go get Peep, my hand raised peachick, out of his pen and take him over to show everyone. I wasn't really sure if he would fly off, or what would happen, but Peep is such a good bird so I trusted him to stay near me since he is so used to people. I walked up to the house and immediately someone leaving started talking kind of loudly "What is THAT?" "Is it for food!?" Peep started making noises and wiggling so I got nervous, but when I got up to the side of the house with the circle of chairs I sat in one with Peep and he stood on my lap for a minute taking everything in then he jumped down and stood in front of my dad sitting down and begged for the cake my dad was eating. My dad gave Peep some cake and he ate it up and my dad got annoyed that Peep kept begging for food so my dad said "Go on go bother someone else." Eventually Peep started walking around the circle of chairs and started eating some grass, and he caught a bug. Everyone was so amazed and thought he was so cute. He was a good bird and stayed in the circle and if he left it he left by only a few feet. There was a toddler there but the kid didn't really mess with Peep, he just stared and Peep didn't mess with him so it was good until Peep flapped around and scared my cousin on the blue guitar! Then the toddler got interested in Peep and was going to touch him but luckily his dad took him away. That was the only thing I was worried about. Peep also jumped up on my dad's Aunt! That was funny. Peep then took a dust bath next to the guys playing guitar so we had to move him because he was kicking up a lot of dust. I thought he wouldn't like the guys on the guitar playing and singing, but at one moment he jumped up on a guitar case and started at my cousin playing the blue guitar, which is the exact same color as Peep's neck. Peep then pecked one of the strings and everyone now thinks that Peep loves music and wants to play the guitar. After a while Peep picked a place a foot out of the circle to take a dust bath and he chilled there like a good bird and I was talking to one of my relatives about peafowl.

Peep let people pet him too, but most people just watched him.

Too cute! I'm glad he behaved. I have a peachick "Peaches" in the living room right now. She doesn't really fit in with everyone outside, but since the hawk ate her little brother last week I'm letting her do what she wants IN the house.
I hope she isn't inside all winter...

Oh I am sorry for your loss. Whenever I let Peep out I am very weary about hawks, but somehow he is really good about knowing what danger is and even if a bird makes an alarm call he bolts under a bush or runs to the back door of the house. He is starting to get too big for hawks.

Peach can't see so well, I think because the USPS took 9 days to deliver the eggs, and she was a miracle and hatched anyway. She gets along ok, but has trouble if you hold out a treat, she always pecks an inch away from it. I don't know how her long distance vision is.
My house is full of challenged animals!

Hi Alea,
Interesting, but don't forget the Bald eagles and Golden eagles, they are bigger than wild turkeys, plus big dogs.
I found peafowls had rather thin long neck, with 3 c.m neck near head, so pay to tell people NOT to hold the bird by neck.
Good idea is to talk to your dad to be forgiving..."Dad, can you please be more forgiving and tolerant to my peacock Peep"
Talk to your mum if your dad is not friendly to Peep.
Your bird Peep is wearing his new immature body plumage, that replaced the juvenile body plumage.
Don't forget your 2-year old Alto as he is in moult and have half-grown green train, the few pin train feathers will had colourful eyes hidden under green train feathers, and you will be impressed when you see the eyes on next month.
Next month Alto will finish growing train feathers with eyes, the longest train feathers will be fully grown before Christmas Day.

Why not show lovely nice BYC members the wonder of Alto's colourful eyed feathers on his green train ???

Clinton.

We don't have Eagles nearby, the eagles are normally closer to the bay. Yes they do have small necks, the feathers make their neck look bigger but it really isn't that big. My dad isn't mean to Peep, he helps take care of him and likes him, he just didn't want him begging him for food the whole time.

I generally don't let other people hold Peep because he starts to shake because he is scared when I hold him near other people, but if he is on the ground walking around and comes up to someone then he is not scared.

Yes I need to get pictures of Alto, maybe he will display for me so I can get a good picture of his train right now. Whenever he shakes all that plastic-like stuff covering the new feathers comes off of him like snow.

Awsome, glad he was so good! wish i could do that with mine...but i know for sure they would be gone!
