Peachick with possible coccidia

Just another update: he lost several grams today but I couldn’t get him to eat until this evening and he ate really good once he decided to! Upon further inspection I noticed he had poopy butt so I got him cleaned up. He’s even spunkier today than previous days so maybe we’re heading in the right direction. I’m still holding off on the corid because I’ve seen no more bloody poop but then again he was clogged up until I cleaned him. I’m going to try to get him to eat more tomorrow and hopefully he’ll gain some more weight.

There is no way a five day old chick is sick with cocci. If you are seeing runny poo sticking to its vent then it has a bacterial infection, probably one of the coli bacteria. Give it one drop of Baytril or Tylan 100 for five days in a row.

He doesn’t have anything stuck to his booty today but he’s still dropping weight. That being said I have to take him out and show him how to eat and I try to do that several times a day but he will only eat at night. I see him drinking in the brooder but not eating. He’s still very spunky though so I’m not exactly sure what is going on! All I have on hand is baytril and if you think I should do that I absolutely will!

Baytril is better than Tylan for infections like this. Chicks can have bacterial infections right out of the egg or picked up in the hatcher and in your case maybe from the poults. I am more inclined to think it was egg related. Cocci takes time to develop, it has to multiply the protozoa and they have to have time to do damage to the organs. Five days is not enough time to do all of that. I would also encourage you to buy some Toltrazuril and dose your chick and poults once per month once they are on the ground. Medicated feed and corid do nothing to kill the protozoa but only starve the cocci and the chick of vitamin B and D to help build resistance, but that takes time and the damage is already done if the chicks come down sick before you treat for it. Yes, give the chick a drop of Baytril once per day for five days to clean up the infection. Also make sure it is warm enough yet be able to get away from the heat if need be.
