My name is Maren. I have been interested in keeping chickens for some time. I recently moved out of our state capitol after trying unsucessfully to revise city land use code to allow three back yard hens. It was during that time that I learned of this helpful website.
We now have five acres, and try to be as self-sufficient as possible. We are third generation small business owners. I work part-time as a Registered Nurse in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. We have two precocious girls, 5 and almost 3.
After extensive research, we picked out 5 Welsummer pullets one week ago. Our local hatchery was out of Marans, so today I picked up our ten, just hatched Mottled Java's. We were hoping for 5 each of the three breeds. Maybe next year.
I have much to learn, but with this website's resources, and experienced neighbors, we expect a happy, healthy flock.
