Well, I let my two big girls out this evening. I told them they had to stay in the front while I worked on their coop just a bit. They minded pretty well. I usually get a this bright orange yard stick to "herd" them if they try to go to neighbors or somethin.

So after I was done workin, I told them "ok, we can go round back now if ya want", so ...(sometimes I swear they understand me) they went chargin round the side of the house. I forgot my stick so went to get it, 15 steps away, when I heard a sound like a chicken crash. (Thats like a car crash, only with chickens, I swear it sounded exactly like that). I went running and they were faced off with a cat. (I really thought one had got hit by a car, only was wrong side of house, so it was a very puzzling and scary sound)

Now my silly girls chase anything that they think doesnt belong, so what I THINK happened is that Fussy went flying headlong after the cat, and the cat didnt run, she wasnt expecting that, and bowled into the cat, whereupon the two kinda "crashed". The cat ran soon as it saw me and thankfully my girls look ok, I dont see any bleeding and they act like everything is fine. I sure hope so, I know how bad cat scratches can be. I would loved to have seen exactly what happened, but I bet I woulda had a heart attack if I witnessed this.

Yea, SC, we all got off lucky, the chickens, me, AND the cat!
And for the first time, the silly chickens found somethin that didnt run from them. (They also THINK dogs run from them because the owners walking them on leashes have to PULL them down the sidewalk, i.e. to a chicken that must mean they are running away)
I really would like to have witnessed what happened in one way, but I pretty much know by the noise and the stance everyone was in when I came around the corner. They all looked shocked! Its not a big cat and well fed, but we used to have a cat that was a mighty hunter and a terror of the neighborhood that was very small as well, so size isnt always an indication. Fussy is a pretty big bird now tho, I would say almost 6 lbs (or more) and she DOES love to chase stuff. First time somethin didnt run from her.

He probably would have, but I dont think a cat normally thinks to run from a chicken! He sure wasnt happy and he wasnt gonna let it go til I came around the corner, cuz he was twitchin his tail and crouched, but he didnt look like he was huntin so much as he just wasnt quite 100% sure what to do. He was just madder than a wet hen.

Could just see him thinkin, "boy I am ticked, that big bird just BOWLED me over, I'm gettin even..yea...hmm, that bird is awfully big....hmmm"

Oh and Chelly, if you live out west, forget the wind stopping. You might get one or two days a year. hehe

Remember me saying your horse better get used to it???? Up at our cabin, you really can count the days there is no wind, we are in a wind corridor there, Wyoming never stops in certain places and I think thats what you are getting.

Yup, there we go, further proof that keeping chickens is a surefire way to lead a dramatastic life. *laughs* I am glad that everyone (of the feathery and you

varieties) are okay!

it's okay, the drama of this morning was just plain funny. Shiva and Parvati are in the new coop, Dusty (my patridge silkie roo) is in the temp coop that they just vacated. So this morning when I let Shiva & Parvati out, Shiva RUNS to their old coop, and starts doing the big boy roo posturing routine at dusty. Now picture, big ol' full grown brahma roo trying to prove to the 12 week old silky boy that he's hot poop. Parvati sort of wanders over, checks out Dusty, looks at Shiva, and I *SWEAR* shook her head as she walked away to do something else and if I could speak chicken I would have heard "Shiva, you are big and pretty, but dumb. Like that fuzz ball could be a threat to your alpha status dumb butt. Let's go eat crickets."

The look was BRILLIANT. So it was drama of the soap opera variety.

(When I left almost an hour later, Shiva was still posturing and Parvati was elsewhere entirely (I think this is the first time I've seen them apart other than when he was hiding after the dog incident the other day).

I can just picture that look...like "couldn't you have waited a couple more years to reincarnate, you dolt." Slifer gave that look when Obelisk wanted to stay outside when it was pouring.

Glad to hear everything is ok, I'd keep an eye out for that cat he may be planning something now.

Since that cat ran away, your chickens probably think they are dominant over him now haha

You know, EE's are supposed to be small, is fussy bigger then red? I keep expecting Esther to stop growing because of what I've read but now your making me wonder if there's any truth to it.

Let us know if the cat comes back and what happens with that, Id like the blow by blow if your chickens kick his A$$
