Hello BYC Members!
This has been a great source of information for me since I decided to get some chicks... they will be arriving on July 7th and I'm getting very excited to start my BYC adventure.
We live in a small bungalow in the countryside of beautiful Prince Edward Island (Canada). Almost all of my neighbors have chickens so I'm going to be in good company.
I've learned that I made my first mistake when it comes to raising chickens because I ordered the chicks before I had anything ready to go. However, I gave myself enough time to get a few things in order before their arrival.
I started construction on my DIY brooder and have recruited a family-friend/carpenter to help me get a small coop constructed in the next week or so.
The one thing I am concerned about is the seasons... and particularly winter. For those who may not be familiar with PEI seasons, there is a saying here that we actually only have 2 seasons: Winter & Potholes.
In the summer, we may have temperatures in the 20-28 degree Celsius range (68-83 F) and in winter we regularly see temperatures drop to -3 to -11 C (12-26 F) and on several occasions we can get down as low as -20 C (-4 F) - this doesn't include the wind chill factor which often drops us down to -30 or -40 C (-22 or -40 F).
I look forward to learning from you all and sharing my experiences as a new BYC farmer! Stay tuned for pictures of my brooder, coop and the new additions!!!
