hi all,
One of my pekin bantams went broody after laying some eggs earlier in spring (Syd.AU) She stayed broody for some time and now she has decided to attack the other chickens in her run whilst clucking continuously and cooing/screeching.
Usually I would put it down to normal chicken behaviour, especially when broody, however, she hasn’t gone back to laying after 10 weeks (not too fussed she is 6) and it is continual pecking and chasing! She has also been number 2 in the order so never been top Chook.
Is this normal for chickens passing into retirement? I feel bad for the other two who are just happy to continue on as usual.

If anything I would have to say confused or illness? Plenty of room for all in their run and they also free roam. Have checked for mites and lice every couple of days but nothing, and she is still eating and drinking.
There is only room to roost and we have taken the nesting boxes away, she just roosts all day. Might just be the beginning of the end

Well Mary, my bantam is still going! She went through a pretty big moult, lost all her feathers on her underside and her comb went very pale :( After two weeks of putting all my older chickens onto the higher protein grower crumble, scratch mix, wormed, de-louesed/mited etc she is starting to finally grow back her feathers.
May be some life in my old girl yet at 7 and a half years old.
